About This Item

[Nashville, Tennessee. First Edition. Stapled Pamphlet. A retelling of a series of revenge killings in a South Carolina town, originating with a mule injuring a prize calf. The narrative is rife with killings: from self defense, to contract killing, the gunning down of sheriffs and deputies, and finally the execution of three by the electric chair. The evangelist author ties up the story nicely with deathbed confessions and clearly listed morals detailing the wrongness of killing, revenge, and temptation, and the healing hand of Jesus. Part true crime novel, part moralizing tale, the account oddly includes a future segregationist presidential candidate Strom Thurmond as the presiding judge and former adulterous lover of one of the condemned. The front and rear covers are separated, with chips and general loss to the former spine, rubbing, and general shelfwear. Two previous owners' names are written on the verso of the front cover and the front endpaper. Minor loss to the rear endpaper. There are only three copies found on OCLC.
