Amsterdam:: Apud Ludovicum Elzevirium, 1648., 1648. Small 8vo. [32], 756 pp. Elaborate engraved title, woodcut initials; lower corner of title torn away, some foxing or browning. Original full vellum, small manuscript spine title. Bookseller's label: Masson & cie.; rubber stamp: Doctor Mario E. Spada. Nice copy. This is the most famous of Jonston's medical writings. ?Jonston's book emphasized the teaching of clinical medicine to students, and therefore represented an interesting choice for Culpeper [his translator, 1652], about half of whose work was undertaken in response to the needs of the English apothecaries, then increasingly numerous and influential.? ?A wide-ranging work, it dealt not only with clinical conditions, but also provided summaries on, for instance, materia medica and on the importance of non-naturals (which he listed as air, meat, drink, motion and rest, sleep and watching) in the preservation of health. Jonston's emphasis on signs and symptoms undoubtedly contributed to a growing empirical outlook in clinical medicine, an influence enhanced by [J.] Michaelis? commentary on Jonston . . . ? - J. K. Crellin, DSB. / First issued in 1642, with five editions, and translated into English in 1652 [?The Idea of Practical Physick?. Arranged in 12 ?books?, or parts: 1) De Hygieine, 2) De affectibus humani corporis praeternaturalibus, & corum signis, 3) De Medicamentis, 4) De Methodo medendi, 5) De -- Morborum, 6) De Morbis Externis, 7) De Febribus, 8) De Morbis Capitis, 9) De Morbis medii Ventris, 10) De Morbis infimi ventris, 11), De Morbis Vennenatis, 12) De Morbis Puerorum. 1) Of preserving health. 2) General remarks on diseases. 3) Of medications. 4) Of healing. 5) More diseases. 6) External diseases, tumors, hair, etc. 7) All types of fevers. 8) Relating to the head, the brain 9) Relating to the mouth, teeth, face, & breasts. 10) Diseases of the internal organs. 11) The French pox, or syphilis. 12) Diseases of the body. 1628 Silius Italicus PUNICA Second Punic War Rome Epic Latin Poetry Jansson

The only surviving book of the epic Roman poet Silius Italicus is 'Punica', a fascinating work on the Second Punic War. First written during the late 1st-century, 'Punica' seems to have been modeled after Virgil, Livy, and Homer and follows General Hannibal of Carthage and his military endeavors. Italicus was known for his stoic influence and focuses on concepts such as emotion, reason, and destiny, through the lens of a historical recounting of Roman military leaders Hannibal and Scipio.
This miniature 1628 edition was published in Amsterdam by Jansson with an engraved title page.

Cornelius Nepos was a 1st-century BC Roman author whose works have mostly all been lost. However, his one surviving work is "Excellentium Imperatorum Vitae" which is a collection of biographical descriptions of Roman and foreign leaders. According to Roberts, this work details: "Roman kings, generals, lawyers, orators, poets, historians, and philosophers."
Notable figures covered by Nepos include Themistocles, Lysander, and most famously Cato the Elder. This 1658 printing is a rare edition by Hackiana.

Description:
1650 Erasmus Colloquies Humanism Rhetoric Philosophy War Latin Elzevier RARE

"When I have a little money, I buy books; and if I have any left, I buy food and clothes."
― Erasmus

Erasmus's famous 'Colloquies' is a collection of humanistic dialogues on a wide variety of subjects, most of which explore man's reactions to other men through conversation. Erasmus, and his pupils, wrote on war, travel, religion, sleep, beggars, funerals, literature, and other topics. According to one expert, 'Colloquies'
"held up contemporary religious practices for examination in a more serious but still pervasively ironic tone." (Coffin)

This work exposed some of Erasmus's humor through the invention of word games and rhetoric exercises used for education. He wanted culture to serve as a model for those living during the Renaissance.
This 1650 edition was published by the famed Elzevier house in Amsterdam.

Description:
A compilation of Quarles' works. The overall title page with details of the publisher is missing, but there is a dedication to King Charles I which was clearly specially written for the work, which makes it likely that it was published in the 1630's (it makes no reference to Civil War). Each work has a separate title page or a large heading, and retains the dedications etc written when they were first published. The first text is 'A Feast for Worms' totalling 64 pages, which has a note for the Reader and has pages 13-36 misbound out of sequence. The second is Pentelogia, a short text covering pp 65-70. The third is Hadassa with a separate title page, preface to the Reader, introduction, dedication, and the History of Esther, running to p 147. The fourth is Job Militant with half title page, proposition, dedication and text running to p 231. The fifth is the History of Sampson with no title page but starting with 'To the Reader' and text to p 232. The sixth is Sion's Sonnets… Read More
