About This Item

Coloniae Agrippinae, 1584. First edition. Uncolored, 739 mm x 500 mm, two sheets joined, with original folds professionally flattened. Oriented with East at the top. A number of small tears and fold separations have been archivally repaired on verso. In good condition.

The map was issued with the booklet Urbis Hierosolyma Depicta which provided further information about sites keyed to the numbers on the map; some later editions of the map retained the 1584 date but were issued in the atlas Theatrum Terrae Sanctae (published posthumously, 1590 and later). The folded sections of this map are 16 cm x 9 cm, the size of the Depicta. Later editions have larger sections and fewer folds since the Theatrum was a larger book.

There are a great many maps of Jerusalem, but this is one of the most influential. Among the 250 numbered and described locations Adrichom identifies 14 stations of the cross, which are still accepted today. The map and his atlas, the Theatrum, went through numerous editions in many languages, even Chinese.
