Description:
1822 Famous 2ed David Porter Journal USS Essex Battle of Valparaiso War of 1812David Porter was an early American naval captain who served on the USS Constitution and the USS Essex. While aboard the Essex, Porter faced significant hardships, including the Battle of Valparaiso where the ship was ultimately disabled. Porter kept a journal of his time aboard the Essex, a journal that was quickly published after capture of the Essex.
According to Hill, the second of Porter's 'Journal' is the "best edition" and is more complete even than the first. In fact, this edition contains the first instance of the details of Porter's loss of the USS Essex in 1814. This edition also includes an expanded preface as well as folding maps and notes and illustrations on the Galapagos Islands.

Protected by Brodart book jacket cover.LBJ noted about this book, "I make no pretense of having written a complete and definitive history of my Presidency. I have tried, rather, to review that period from a President's personal and political philosophy, a President's experience and knowledge, a President's aspirations, and a President's response to the demands that were made on him." I have not written these chapters to say' This is how it was," but to say, "This is how I saw it from my vantage point."

Description:
Oneida Association, Oneida Reserve, NY, 1849; Unique collection of five first edition Oneida Association publications: 1.) "Confessions Of John Noyes," autobiography of controversial Oneida founder John Humphrey Noyes, (1849; 96 pages), who after undergoing a religious conversion in 1834 during a meeting conducted by fiery revivalist Charles Grandison Finney, decided to dedicate his life to the theology of Perfectionism, and by 1836 had established a commune of "Free Church," or "Bible Socialists," at Putney, Vermont where they remained for twelve years until forced to move to New York’s Oneida Indian Reserve to avoid prosecution for adultery, owing to their practice of universal marriage. "Confessions," published the first year at Oneida, is Noyes’ personal account of his life and religious evolution, plus a history of Perfectionism; (2.) Faith Facts, Or A Confession Of The Kingdom Of God And The Age Of Miracles, (1850; 40 pages), the first Free Church…

Iowa City, IA: State Historical Society of Iowa, 1975. Hardcover. Good/Published Without Dust Jacket. Folio - over 12" - 15" tall. 580 pp. Tightly bound. Three of the four corners lightly bumped. I noticed about a dozen pages where the top page corners were dog eared. There are a few pages toward the end of the book, that were dog eared, that also have a few pen notations of things the previous owner found important. No ownership markings. Published without dust jacket. The primary reason for the lower "good" rating is because the brown boards show uneven discoloring. PLEASE consider this a good reading copy.

New York, Richmond, Chicago, & Toledo: H. H. Hardesty, 1885. Original color lithographed map printed by Rand, McNally & Company, Engravers and published in HARDESTY'S HISTORICAL AND GEOGRAPHICAL ENCYCLOPEDIA: SPECIAL VIRGINIA EDITION. 19 3/8 inches by 13 1/4 inches on a 21" X 14 1/2" sheet. The map depicts the Territory of Utah in its final form--large areas had been removed and ceded to Nevada, Colorado, Wyoming, and Nebraska since Utah became a U. S. Territory in 1850. The issue of polygamy prevented statehood until it was finally granted in 1896. This map features railroads and topography and uses color to set off counties from each other. Unlike most atlas maps of the period, this map identifies most small towns. The map is guaranteed to be moe than 135 years old. The map is in about very good condition: generally clean and bright, with slight toning of paper and one faint water stain near the center-left edge of the map.. Original. Single Sheet. Very Good-.
