From the Intro: Snuff is tobacco in powdered form. It is believed to have made its first appearance in China when presented to Kangxi Emperor (1662-1722) by Portuguese Jesuit missionaries. The growth in popularity of snuff necessitated the manufacture of suitable containers. Hence the siyanhu or snuff bottle was born.
