About This Item
("James Madison") in black ink, as Secretary of State, February 14, 1805, on paper watermarked Curteis & Sons, 1799. 7 15/16" x 9 7/8"; 1 page with integral leaf; very good (light creasing and toning). To Vice-President George Clinton "Sir By the direction of the President of the United States, I do my self the honor of transmitting to you the . certificate of your election as Vice President of the United States; being with the highest respect. Sir, Your most obed. servant. James Madison." Docketed on verso: "March 14, 1805, letter from Secretary Madison enclosing certificate of election of Vice President of U.S." Thomas Jefferson and George Clinton were declared elected by Congress when the electoral votes were tabulated on 13 February, 1805. The Jefferson’s inauguration took place in the Senate Chamber on the Capitol on March 4th. Like other Founding Fathers, the great bulk of Madison’s letters and papers have been absorbed by institutions. For this reason, Madison’s Letters Signed is scarce and expensive.
