About This Item

London: Penguin Books, 1979. 9th printing ed.. Paperback, very good condition, spine faintly faded, corner tips covers little creased, small tear top spine, pages lightly toned, minor edgewear. 176 pp. In 1964, the Trinadad-born author V. S. Naipaul published his semi-autobiographical account of a year spent living in India. Two visits later he wrote the current followup in which he recapitulates the feelings that the vast, mysterious and agonized continent aroused in him. His conviction is that India, wounded by a thousand years of foreign rule, has still not found an ideology of regeneration. Arguably he defines the problems better than a team of economists and other experts from the World Bank.

Synopsis

V. S. NAIPAUL was born in Trinidad in 1932. He went to England on a scholarship in 1950. After four years at University College, Oxford, he began to write, and since then he has followed no other profession. He has published more than twenty books of fiction and non-fiction, including A House for Mr. Biswas , A Bend in the River and A Turn in the South , and a collection of letters, Between Father and Son . He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.
