About This Item

Madras: The Christian Knowledge Society Press, 1853. "Comprising numerous directions for plain wholesome cookery, both of Oriental and English with much miscellaneous matter answering all general purposes of reference connected with household affairs likely to be immediately required by families, messes and private individuals, residing at presidencies or outstations. By the author of "manual of gardening for western India" the spine of this book has at some point been detached from the binding, torn and then carefully repaired with glue. There is a large crack down the centre and at the top where clearly it was broken before repair. There is some loss to cloth at hinges and to head and foot of spine and there are interior mends to front hinges and to page 2 and 3. Otherwise binding is generally tight except for a small chunk of pages (193 to 200) which are loosening at the bottom half of binding. Boards have heavy bumping to corners, bumping to top rear edge, rubbing to corners exposing cardboard and obviously have general signs of ageing. The design on front looks as though it might once have been gilt but this has been rubbed away leaving just the impression. Page edges are tanned and there are two previous owner's stamps on front pages and a small newspaper article about the book cut and pasted on to loose fep. The bottom corner of page 43 has been torn away with a little loss to text. If you require photographs of interior or exterior of this book please e-mail and we can send them to you.. fourth Edition -- Revised. Hard Cover. Fair/No Jacket.
