A 1994 softcover reprint of Captain Eugene Fitch Ware's 1911 description of skirmishes with Indians in the American West in 1864. At that time, lengthy trains of settlers' wagons threaded across the high plains, alarming the Indian tribes and sometimes resulting in attacks. Captain Fitch, as a member of the Seventh Iowa Cavalry, was responsible for assisting these pioneers make a safe passage across the prairie and saw these conflicts in person. Includes an introduction by John D. McDermott, and end notes by Clyde C. Walton. With drawings and several small sketch maps. --- A softcover, in purple wraps with Charles Schreyvogel's color painting "Breaking Through the Line" to front cover. --- A clean, tightly-bound, newish copy but with prior owner's signature to first page, cover corner crease and bold remainder mark to textblock lower edge.; Octavo - 8 to 9 in. tall; xix, 483 pages .
