About This Item
Hardcover. 8vo. Harper and Brothers, New York, 1907. Xxxvi, 573 decal-edge pages. Colour, Black and White Illustrations and Photographs throughout. First Edition/First Printing. Original beige woven pattern cloth with red, yellow and black with some rubbing on the edges and spine. The cover design is taken from a parfleche or satchel of dressed hide painted by Wihunahe (Chief Woman) of the Cheyenne Tribe. This was chosen because as the parfleche carries their personal possessions so does this book hold their lore. Black and white and colour illustrations that are outstanding. Beautiful photos of Native Americans from that period. The inside first page has a tiny tear other than that it is in fine condition but pages are aged. A unique and rare compendium of Native folklore, decorations and myths including rare musical scores from many of the tribes in their original languages with contributions from: Kiowa, Apache, Cheyenne, Pawnee, Dakota, Wabanaki, Arapaho, Hopi, Laguna, Zuni, Yuma, Mohave-Apache, Kwakiutl, Pima and Winnebago tribes. It is a magnificent edition. Miss Curtis recorded 149 songs from the tribes that cannot be duplicated today, such as Songs of Spirit Dance, Buffalo Hide Ceremony, Songs to the Earth, Love Songs, Medicine Healing songs, Hunting to name but a few! A rare collection of Native history.
