[Ottawa]: National Museum of Canada,[1963]., 1963. First edition. Sixth edition. 8vo. Red cloth, titles stamped in gilt on the front cover and spine, xii, 452 pp., color frontispiece, introduction, illustrated mostly from photographs, color plates, portraits, maps, bibliography, index. Part one includes chapters on languages, economic conditions, food resources, hunting and fishing, dress and adornment, dwellings, travel and transportation, trade and commerce, social and political organization, social life, religion, folklore and traditions, and drama, music, and art. The second part of the book describes the tribes in different groupings: the migratory tribes of the eastern woodlands, the plains tribes, tribes of the Pacific coast, of the Cordillera, and the Mackenzie and Yukon River basins, and finally the Eskimo. Includes seven full-colored plates of tribal chiefs in their tribal regalia; 130 black and white illustrations; and a map of Canada showing tribal and linguistic divisions. A whole chapter has been dedicated to the Eskimo people. The only change from the original edition is a new section that discusses the probable age of archeological remains of Indian and Eskimo sites in various parts of Canada. Former owner's inked name on the front pastedown sheet and tiny remnant of a label on front free fly leaf else fine in lightly rubbed dust jacket, repaired small crease and tear to the rear cover, lightly sunned on the spine. and with light wear to the spine ends, corners, and extremities. Front cover art depicts Indian masks of three of the broad tribal divisions of Canada, namely Eastern, Plains, and Western, have been used in stylized form.
