About This Item

New York, Frederick A Praeger,1963 [1st edition], (No. 123 in the series Praeger Publications In Russian History And World Communism); 150 x 220 mm, xvi, 336 pp. Hard Cover VG red cloth - a few edge marks but sound and tight - in a fair Dustwrapper - still bright but with mild rubbing, edge wear, chips and tears. From the dw: "INDONESIAN COMMUNISM is the first full-scale English-language account of the history of the Communist Party of Indonesia, the oldest Communist Party in Asia, and the largest outside the Sino-Soviet bloc. In it, the author discusses in detail the abortive Communist revolt of 1926 against Dutch colonial rule and the1948 revolt against the nascent republic. He traces the spectacular growth of the Party, the schisms that have racked it since its birth, and the emergence of a 'national Communist' faction under the leadership of the late Tan Malaka. In delineating the growth and impact of Indonesian Communism, Mr. Brackman covers the entire political scene and structure of contemporary Indonesia - Sukarno' self-styled 'guided democracy' and the role of the Communists; American policy; the 1958 anti-Sukarno rebellion; the West Iran dispute; and the ceaseless struggle of the democratic forces to re-establish representative government and civil liberties. He presents a sweeping account of the political storms that have buffeted this vital area of Southeast Asia, and of the men and issues that have played key roles in the dramatic postwar events. His interviews with prominent Communist figures from Alimin to D. N. Aidit, the Party's leader, paint fascinating firsthand portraits of the important yet enigmatic men who help shape Asia's destiny."
