About This Item
E. J. Brill, c.1892. The most important early work on South African and South East African tribal art, weapons and beadwork. The edition is estimated at approximately 100 copies, including 90 in folio form. These were produced for royalty and for the most part remain in libraries. -- Pieter Nicolaas Muller (1859-1941), the author was a Dutch businessman, diplomat and traveller. He was the son of a prominent Rotterdam-based business family. Muller started his career as a businessman, trading in East and West Africa as the interim manager of Handels Compagnie Mozambique. Between 1882 - 1883, together with Snelleman, he travelled to Zanzibar visiting trading stores. Once the business trip was concluded they walked through present-day Mozambique and Zululand, collecting ethnographic artifacts and writing reports on the societies and people they encountered on their way. Articles of the trip were published in Dutch journals and newspapers. 27 chromolithographed plates. First edition Very good Hardcover
