About This Item
New York: G.W. Dillingham, Publisher, 1888. Hardcover. Good Plus to Very Good/No Jacket. A prominent, bestselling Southern novelist both before and after the Civil War, Wilson wrote "Inez" in 1850, when she was fifteen and living with her parents in San Antonio shortly after the Mexican-American War. It was first published in 1855 and many times since by many different publishers. "Inez" is a sentimental, moralistic love story of an orphan girl's religious journey from skepticism to devout faith. 5 1/2 x 7 1/2 inches, 298 pages plus 2 pages of publisher's ads in dark blue, cloth-covered boards with gilt title/author box and decorations on spine. Back cover shows faded pattern where another book or other item rested for an extended period of time, o/w minimal surface and edgewear. Front hinge just beginning to loosen, not cracked. Rear hinge intact; binding firm. Text edges are somewhat foxed and soiled. Front end page shows neatly-written signatures of two previous owners. Text is moderately age-toned with a slight spine lean, o/w clean, unmarked and complete. It is unknown if this Dillingham edition is a First Thus or a first printing. It is, nevertheless, a more than decent, collectable copy of a noteworthy novel.
