About This Item

Pablo Picasso ink portrait of Dora Maar, signed & dated 19.5.53. An early ink example of his muse Dora Maar, an artistic theme that was developed by Picasso in ensuing years. Some photos shown here are of later usages of this theme of Dora by Picasso, but the ink drawing for sale here predates those works, being an earlier attempt by Picasso to capture his Dora on paper. This beautiful, magnetic piece of art has an authentic signature and is dated in the artist's usual style - check the numbers against those seen in other examples of his signed drawings and lithographs online, you will see this is perfectly genuine. The paper shows slight age spots (see photos), although it is that yellowish paper which Picasso used for many artworks (later switching to white paper for portraits). The depth of his yellowed fine paper was generally about 21 cm, as here. The signature is in his classic style slanted upwards and underlined. Although there is no certificate, I have a collection of works by Picasso which have all been vindicated by close comparative work. It is guaranteed this work is genuinely by the master Picasso and close investigation will confirm this. The artwork comes supplied in the frame as shown, this is supplied for free. It is hard to put a fixed value on any Picasso as the ranges are extreme, from a few hundred pounds to many millions. This portrait of a famed Picasso muse is cautiously valued at around £30,000, although as a precursor to some of Picasso's most celebrated works or Dora Maar, it has an important place in his historical canon. It can be proven to be genuine by various means (ie. the paper, the art, the pen, the signature and dating style), hence the asking price here is set at £12,000. A large auction house (who would require certificates which can be procured through a gallery) might ask £250,000 perhaps more, although investments of time and money would be needed to get to that higher value. There is only one original, so there can be only one buyer. However, other original artworks of Picasso will be listed for sale here soon, so keep watching. If more photos are required, please do ask.
