Kegan Paul & Co.-London- 1881-1st Edition-2nd Printing (or 2nd Edition stated on title page)- Hardcover:-12mo- VG/ no dj as issued- original publishers green tweed cloth with gilt titles on spine-lightly rubbed, some spotting but tight and clean- this is the Second Edition or, 1st edition-2nd printing of Stevenson's FIRST novel. Not well received by a critical public at first, caused a very small 2nd printing, making this 2nd Edition even scarcer than the 1st. - and most assuredly much scarcer than the American 1st By Roberts Brothers in 1883.- x + 227pp all clean, no tears or writing, binding and spine are strong and tight- ex-library bookplate on inside wallpaper endpapers dated October 1884- SEE PHOTOS- "RLS and a friend travelled in two canoes along canals and rivers in central France and Belgium. The result was a book full of charm but little incident, and the work was not greatly successful. Stevenson glories in the slow pace of his vagabond life traveling through France. The young author expresses pleasure at having been suspected of being a Prussian spy by the French gendarmes and pride at having endured hunger, cold, and misery on a hard and dangerous journey." There were only 750 copies of the 1st Edition published and even less of the 2nd Edition!-Currently none available on the internet!
