About This Item
New York: The Limited Editions Club, 1944. Hardcover. Illustrations by Lynd Ward. Small 4to. Full brown sheepskin with gilt lettering, rules and pictorial stamping, color pictorial chemise, slipcase. viii, 221pp. Top edge gilt. Color lithographs. Fine/near fine/very good. Minor slipcase wear and age toning. Superb, tight LEC production of the British writer's popular 1929 novel, quickly retitled "A High Wind in Jamaica" -- first title in the LEC's 16th series and featuring outstanding illustrations by legendary artist and graphic novelist Ward (1905-85). Not only that, but this special copy bears two choice autograph additions: Tipped to front flyleaf are two fine, matching heavy stock 5" X 3" cards signed boldly in black ballpoint by two stars of the 1965 film version. At top is English novelist/writer MARTIN AMIS (1949-2013, who plays John Thornton); at upper right he dates it 5 June 1987. Below this is ISABEL DEAN (1918-97, who plays John Thornton's mother Alice); at upper right she dates it 18 January 1983. Rear colophon notes limitation of 1,500 numbered copies (this #241) signed by artist Ward. Laid in are the perfect bookmarks: Amis and Dean's original transmittal envelopes; also laid in is the relevant "Monthly Letter." NEWMAN 165.
