About This Item

Very good condition, all pages tight and clean with no foxing, stains or tearing; some abrasion on hinge of front cover and glue separation from front board, though stitching is still tight.

This work follows Admiral Mahan's (1840-1914) classic and highly influential The Influence of Sea Power upon History 1660-1783 (1890), and his masterful and comprehensive analysis of French (particularly) and European naval warfare in the period between the American War of Independence and the French Revolution in The Influence of Sea Power upon the French Revolution and Empire, 1793–1812 (2 vols., 1892).

In The Interest of America in Sea Power (1897), a collection of articles and essays he wrote for a number publications, he explains the centrality of maritime capability for the present and future of the United States, and endeavors to make his fellow citizens aware of their challenges, responsibilities and critical need for sea power.

Mahan was certainly the most influential American author of the 19th century in terms of his influence on naval strategy, tactics and philosophy, and his works are still considered important today. Arguably his work was pivotal in establishing the United States as a world power.
