About This Item

Vienna: Johann Thomas Trattner, 1795. Book. Very Good. Full-Leather. Second Edition. 1795-1796. Second improved edition. Two volumes in quarto, original full brown calf. Marbled paper endpapers and marbled edges. 293, 423 pp. With a folding plate (36 cm. x 36 cm.) at the rear of Volume I showing the classifications of knowledge in table form. Volume I is dedicated to "Bibliography" and Volume II (in two parts) to "Literary History" and book collecting. A fascinating early history of book printing and book collecting with reports on auction sales, printers, collectors, libraries and the great collections of the day as well as a history of the development of classifications of scientific knowledge and books thereon with a particular Viennese perspective on the development of book arts throughout Europe. A very tight, sound and generally very clean, bright and unmarked set with mostly very crisp, bright white pages with no tears creases etc. Gently ex-libary with blanked bookplates on pastedowns and a few marks only to the first few pages. Thereafter only one or two small roundstamps in margins. Some faint waterstaining to latter pages of Volume I. Volume II impeccably bright white pages. Folding plate in rear of Volume I very crisp and neatly folded. Leather old and dry with scratches and rubbing. Spine leather lacking but text block solid. Overall very good..
