About This Item

London: John Murray, 1837. Leather. Very Good. 9" by 5.5". None. A collection of books on the history of Literature in Europe, written by Henry Hallam Includes information on the general state of literature in the middle ages to the beginning of the sixteenth century. Henry Hallam (July 1777 – January 1859) was a English historian. Hallam became connected with the brilliant band of authors and politicians who led the Whig party, a connection to which he owed his appointment to the well-paid and easy post of commissioner of stamps; but took no part in politics himself. He was, however, an active supporter of many popular movements—particularly of that which ended in the abolition of the slave trade; and he was sincerely attached to the political principles of the Whigs, both in their popular and in their aristocratic aspects. Bookplate from Ramsgate Monastic Library. Includes volume I, II, III and IV of a four volume set. In a half calf binding with marbled boards. Externally, a trifle rubbed with some marks and wear to the boards. A bookplate from the monastic library in Ramsgate has been left to the front pastedown. A small closed tear has been left the front free-endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and generally clean with some light scattered spots to the first and last pages only. Very Good
