About This Item
London: J. Nourse, 1759. First edition. leather_bound. Contemporary full brown calf, double gilt border fillets. Very good. 396 pages. 21 x 13 1/2. Born in Scotland, Flemyng arrived London 1751 to teach physiology to nascent medical students who had not been to the Universities. This work contains the substance of his London lectures. The author was abreast of the best physiological teaching of the time, and an original experimenter and reasoner as well. In a letter to Haller he states that motor and sensory nerves are anatomically distinct, although they may exist in the same bundle -- the experimental proof come many years later. [see: DNB p.705]. Bookplate, fresh and clean copy, raised bands, chipping to backstrip extremities, but overall a firm copy.
