Biography of Ishi (ca. 1860 - 1916), one of the Native Americans in Northern California to have lived most of his life without contact with Euro-American culture. Ishi literally means "man" in Yahi. This account by anthropologist Theodora Kroeber (1897 - 1979), who never met Ishi herself, is based on notes & comments of her anthropologist husband, Alfred L. Kroeber (1876 - 1960). This book was first published a year after Alfred Kroeber's death. 255 pgs w/archival photos, 10 chapters in 2 parts: Part I, Ishi the Yahi; and Part II, Mister Ishi, followed by Epilogue: Death in a Museum.
