There is also an annual city tournament, which had its first edition in 1946, and reached its 62nd edition in 2007. The international tournament started off in 1928, but only in the period from 1941 to 1970 was it a truly international tournament with considerable reputation. After 1970, only seven international tournaments have been played. The 1951, 1954, 1969 and 2001 editions were zonal tournaments. The 1958 contest was held at the Hotel Provincial in Mar del Plata. and is part of an iconic beachfront complex, built in 1946 by the celebrated architect Alejandro Bustillo.

Philip Klett was renowned for composing extremely hard to solve problems, often with hidden zugzwang and many variations. He composed direct mates. In 1878 he published P. Klett Schachprobleme. Mit einer Einfuhrung in die Theorie des Schachproblems including 112 problems. In it he described chess problems as " mathematical poetry ". The book was reissued 100 years later by John D. Beasley as "A Selection of Chess Problems by Philip Klett, with a solving commentary" (British Chess Magazine, 1978). Klett is considered one of the most important composers of the old German school of chess composition.

The 1990 WCC match between Garry Kasparov and Anatoly Karpov was held from October 8 to December 30. The match locale was split, with the first 12 games played in New York, USA, and the final 12 in Lyons, France. The prize fund was three million dollars, with 5/8 going to the winner. In case of a tie, the prize fund would be shared equally with Kasparov retaining the title.Unlike the 1987 WCC cycle in which Karpov was seeded directly into the final candidate match, this time he was only reserved a spot in the quarter finals, and thus had to win three mini-matches in order to face Kasparov. Efim Bogoljubov scored first a full point ahead of Akiba Rubinstein whom scored 6 points. and Rudolf Spielmann, Carl Ahues and Ernst Grünfeld tied for third each with a score of 5. The other contestants were Edgard Colle (4), Paul Johner, Paul M List and Friedrich Sämisch (3 1/2), and Walther Von Holzhausen (2 1/2). This was Rubinstein's last tournament as a Berliner. He soon took up residence in Antwerp.

Tied for second were Friedrich (Fritz) Samisch and Savielly Tartakower with scores of 6. Rudolf Spielmann took 4th with 5 1/2. Ernst Jacobson was 5th with 3 points and Jorgen Muller was 6th with 1 1/2. The name of the compiler has never been established. The miscellaneous collection of anecdotes, essays and poems at the end is not without interest. The Danish Chess Championship was organized by the Danish Chess Union (DSU) and first held in 1910. A masterclass was first introduced in 1915. But it is only from 1922 that the title of Danish chess champion was introduced, this was the first year also players from Copenhagen joined. The Master Class for 1916 was contested by 8 players. It was won b P F Johner with a score of 5 and tied two through 4 by M Marchand, O. von Lowenborg and H Krause. 5th place was claimed by O Sevensson with 3 points. 6th place was a tie between Johs Giersing and G Nyholm. The last place was regulated to E Jacobson with 1 1/2.
