London & New York: John Tallis & Company, 1851. Other. 340 by 250mm (13½ by 9¾ inches).. Steel engraving, hand colored in outline and wash. Fine engraved map is showing of the Islands of the Atlantic including the Azores, Madeira, Bermuda, the Canary Islands and the Cape Verde Islands. The map is decorated with six finely hand colored engraved vignettes: views of Fayal, Pico and Villa Franca in the Azores, the chapel in the Rock of Vicente on Cape Verde Islands, Funchal, Madeira and Tenerifa on the Canary Islands. The actual map was drawn and engraved by J. Rapkin. The illustrations were engraved by various artists: R. Radclyffe, W. Lacy, J. Rogers, J. H. Kernot, J. B. Allen, T. Fleming, H. Winkles, R. Baker after drawings by H. Warren, H. Winkles and H. Wray. In excellent condition.

Edinburgh: Tallis, J & F., 1851. unbound. very good. Map. Steel engraving with early outline color. Image measures 9.5" x 12.75".<br/><br/> Includes black-and-white vignettes of Hungarian peasants and nobles, Pesth and the Fortress of Buda, and a view of the Danube. Minor wear along bottom edge. John Tallis Jr. (1817-1876) was a London born bookseller who continued the prolific map publishing company started by his father. After a partnership with his brother, Tallis Jr. expanded the business to New York in 1849 as well as Boston, Cincinnati, Rochester, Philadelphia and Baltimore. He is remembered as one of the last decorative map makers, and this lovely map exemplifies his work. Reference: Carta Hungarica Terkepgyujtemeny, Nadasdy Ferenc Muzeum Sarvar, #58.<br/><br/>

Vignettes include images of George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, a buffalo hunt, Penn's treaty with the Indians, and the Washington Monument. In excellent condition. Map extends from the East Coast to Missouri, Iowa and Arkansas. Minnesota is not marked (it became a territory in 1849) and the border of Texas runs along the Rio Grande to the west, encompassing parts of what is today New Mexico, and along the Arkansas River to the north. Vignettes include images of George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, a buffalo hunt, Penn's treaty with the Indians, and the Washington Monument, plus the capitol building in Washington.
