Rome, 1828. COSTUME. Italian Religious Costume. Rome: n.d.c.a. 1822-1828].
Small folio (9 3/4 x 6 7/8 inches; 249 x 175 mm). 133 leaves. With 133 hand-colored engravings of Italian religious figures, some heightened in metallic ink. Engraved on various types of paper. Some engravings are printed with dates ranging between 1822-1828, some with Rome, and names of the engravers. Some with no imprints at all.
Contemporary half red morocco over red morocco-grain cloth. Morocco double-ruled in gilt. Spine ruled and lettered in gilt. All edges speckled red. Previous owner's armorial bookplate on front pastedown. Inner hinges professionally repaired. Occasionally leaves are trimmed close at bottom margin or fore-edge, but never affecting image. A few instances of toning, but generally very bright and clean. Overall a very good copy.
Engravings include 133 high-ranking Italian religious figures including the Pope, cardinals, members of the orthodox church, prelates, cardinals, monks of different orders, and others. The engravings are stamped with signatures of S. Marroni, Giuseppe Capparoni, Ferrari, Mochetti, and others.
