This is a title in the publisher's Urban Life in America series. A book that studies the Italian immigrant community in Chicago from 1880 to 1930. This was one of the major immigrant groups in the United States and its assimilation parallels the urbanization of America as well as its industrialization. The author examines the Italian and Italian-American social institutions, economic activity, political groups, and their relation to crime that developed as they assimilated into American urban life. There is also a careful description of the mobility of Italian immigrants and Italian-Americans within the entire urban landscape from the ghettoes to the subarbs and this includes a special emphasis on how the ethnic colonies within the city acted as a staging ground for a predominantly rural people to adjust to American urban life as well as American habits and ideas. Endnotes, a note on sources, indexed, 300p.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Good/Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Ex-Library.
