Omaha, NE: National Printing Co., 1904. 8vo (8" x 5.5"), green black-stamped cloth illustrating a Western scene of a wagon trail, with gilt lettering spine and front-cover. 151 pp. First edition of Collins's account of his overland journey and other western adventures. "The author was a post trader at Fort Laramie for 10 years. His book is a most valuable journal of his trip across the plains and adventures among the Indians; hunting, mining, and trading experiences" (Eberstadt). In 1911, following Collins's death, the undistributed copies of the first edition were bound up with his Stories of the Plains and distributed to friends, per his will. REFERENCES: Howes C594; Eberstadt 134: 536. CONDITION: Good, moderate wear to extremities, corners bumped; contents bright and clean. An appealing copy.

Title page in Volume 1 in both English and French.. Publisher's original cloth in a small sand grain design. This is clearly Winterbottom's Type 'M' (Tomlinson). Krupp (p.30) notes this as San1, but without a Winterbottom cross-reference. She ascribes an appearance date of 1850 for this early design; to find it on books published in 1835 is a treat. That it would appear on a Pickering work should be no surprise. Pickering started experimenting with bookcloth as early as 1823 through his binder, Archibald Leighton, who was responsible for many innovations in the design and use of early bookcloth. The text constitutes mainly the remains of Thomas of Britain's Tristan Romance, composed in the 12th and 13th centuries in Norman French and Greek, here edited and rendered in the originals by Fr. First American edition of Bolshevik writer Libedinsky's first novel, first published in Russian in 1922, an account of one week in a remote Siberian village torn apart by the Revolution. Facing famine, Communist leaders order the villagers into the forest to chop wood for fuel, creating an opening for a counterrevolutionary revolt. The violent aftermath is reflected through the eyes of a dozen characters, both Reds and Whites, and the unlucky villagers caught in the middle: "The Easter bell-ringing floated over the town, and the sound of it was interwoven with the tapping of the machine-gun. . . . She got up with difficulty." A Week was the first proletarian novel to find a wide readership outside Russia. Translator Arthur Ransome attributes the novel's success to its documentary quality: "Libedinsky aimed so simply . . . his was so clearly an attempt to see rather than an attempt to describe." Oblong folio. 37 black and white maps and charts showing sections of the propsed and existing sections of the highway through Guatemala to Panama. This is the plate volume only, no text. Printed paper wraps bound with rivets. The item has been folded once vertically with wear and loss to the covers. The maps have age toning but are mostly in very good condition, the vertical crease being more a bend on the maps than a crease. The size is 10 by 15 inches; some maps are larger and are folded at the right edges to fit. Only a good copy, but very scarce.
