No. 92 of 300 copies printed on Japanese paper.The work of French author and poet Edmond Pilon, this delightful volume is illustrated with fifty mounted plates of Greuze's work, eight of which are in colour, each retaining their original captioned tissue guard. Collated, complete.Known also for his genre scenes and history paintings, Greuze was most celebrated for his portraits, with this 'l'edition d'art' reproducing and discussing his portraits of the women and young girls of the eighteenth century.With the contemporary note reading 'with best wishes from Mary, grateful thanks for a lovely present' to the front pastedown.A beautifully bound and illustrated celebration of this eighteenth century French painter. In a full crushed morocco signed binding, with gilt detailing. Light fading to back strip, with a touch of rubbing to head of front and rear joint. Otherwise, externally exceptionally bright. Contemporary owner's inscription to front pastedown, with foxing to front and rear endpapers. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and generally clean, with the odd spot to page perimeters. Based in the literary city of Bath, our offices are housed in the Eastern Dispensary. Built in 1845, the building originally existed as a charitable institution providing medical care. The building now houses our collection of over twenty thousand books and has five full time members of staff.
