About This Item
London: The Leisure Circle/Century Hutchinson, 1986. Apparent First. Hardcover. Very Good +/very good. 493 p,; hardcover;pictorial DJ. The story of Devon-born Jack McKenna and his love for a red roan mare named Bethlehem. When Beth is requisitioned for battlefield service in WWI, Jack leaves his young wife and infant son to rescue his beloved mare. The language shifts, sometimes jarringly, from lyrical descriptions of the countryside and the horses Jack works with, and unsparing descriptions of the harshness of working class life in the early years of the 20th century, and the brutality of trench warfare. A moving and gripping story.
