About This Item
Adelaide: Vardon Pritchard, Printers, 1905. 2nd Edition. Paperback. Very Good. Adelaide, Vardon Pritchard, Printers, 1905 (second edition)/ 1905. Octavo, [vi], 341, [1] (colophon) pages plus 6 full-page plates (3 from photographs). Pictorial wrappers lightly marked and creased, with minor wear to the spine; trifling signs of handling; a very good copy. The first page (the verso of the frontispiece) is inscribed in ink to 'Jack Rowan from the author Harry Driscoll 10.5.09'. Henry John Driscoll was born in Adelaide in 1857; his obituary appeared in 'The Advertiser' on 4 September 1916. This novel, and its sequel, 'Bushmen All. A Romance of the Never-Never' (1908), 'deal with pioneering life in the Riverina and the dry country nearer the centre and, though not cleverly constructed, contains some authentic - and sometimes diverting - episodes of station life' (Paul Depasquale: 'A Critical History of South Australian Literature, 1836-1930', 1978).
