About This Item

London: Chapman and Hall, 1873. Leather. Near Fine. 9" by 6". H. K. Browne. An excellent new edition of this comedic novel by Charles Lever, with illustrations throughout by Phiz. First published in 1844, this is a new edition of this humorous novel, which contains a great deal of military writing.Charles Lever (1806-1872) was an Irish novelist, highly praised by Anthony Trollope. His works were humorous in nature, with simple characters and light, flowing descriptions. With illustrations throughout by Phiz. Hablot Knight Browne, or Phiz, is best known for his illustrations for the works of Dickens, which include 'David Copperfield', 'Dombey and Son', 'The Pickwick Papers' and 'Bleak House'. Bound by Bayntuns of Bath.A lovely and smart copy of this work. In a half calf binding. Externally generally smart; just a touch rubbed to the raised bands and with a little wear to the boards. Cloth is lifting to the head of the rear board over the edge, not affecting the board. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are occasionally a touch spotted. Near Fine
