A romance based on the life of infamous eighteenth century criminal Jack Sheppard. Featured in the 'Collection of Ancient and Modern British Authors' series vol CCLV, first Paris edition in the English language. The first edition appeared in London in the same year, the story first serialised in Bentley's Miscellany from 1839 to 1840. This edition does not feature the illustrations by George Cruikshank. Written by William Harrison Ainsworth, prolific author of historical fiction. In the original publisher's full cloth binding, renewed endpapers, marbled edges. Externally very smart with minor shelf wear, lightly bumped to head and tail of spine. Internally, firmly bound. Spotting scattered to leaves, Very Good
