About This Item
New York: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1997. Portfolio. Fine. A pristine copy of this imposing 1997 portfolio-in-facsimile, limited to 525 copies. Includes 3 spiralbound sketchbooks in facsimile (even down to the spiral binding) and an original text volume, all housed within a printed folio box bound in light-brown cloth. The sketchbooks focus roughly on an especially fertile period, 1937-1941, and the text volume, written by Katharine Baetjer, Lisa Mintz Messinger and Nan Rosenthal, consists of many black-and-white reproductions by the Old Masters and by 20th century Mexican painters such as Oroszco and Siqueros, as well as by the Surrealists. All of this is by way of demonstrating the book's principal argument that these were among the great early influences on Pollock. A lovely imprint by The Metropolitan Museum of Art itself, an important piece of Pollock scholarship and a very attractive Pollock collectible.
