Laid in is an invitation from the publisher to attend a reception with Michener. Also laid in is an Autograph Note Signed ("Herb") from one of the contributors, Herbert Mitgang, to another contributor, the poet Daniel Hoffman, telling him that "Michener loved the festschrift - I announced the title at the presentation and told people that Dan Hoffman had inspired the title by his piece. It was perfect." The final line of Hoffman's tribute is: "We in the Republic of Letters are lucky to have him as our first citizen." The note is folded as mailed, and has a tear at the fold.
