About This Item

New York: Dodd, Mead & Company, 1899. First edition. Hardback. Good/No dust jacket.. Howard Pyle & his pupils. Dodd, Mead & Company, New York, 1899. First edition. Two volume set. Book condition: good. Vol II is a little faded and shows more signs of wear than its companion which we would probably grade very good. Both volumes are a little bumped at the corners (II more than I). Text block bindings sound save for three consecutive pages (39-40 plus illustration) which are loose in Vol II. Blue cloth with gilt motif to fronts and gilt decoration and titles to spines. Top edge gilt. Voume I has a colour miniaure frontispiece by Lillie V. O'Ryan whilst Vol II has similar by Sharpless. Both volumes are profusely illustrated by Howard Pyle & pupils in b&w. This famous historical romance is set before and during the American Revolutionary War. It narrates the struggle of the colonies to gain their freedom and the struggle of the hero, Jack Brereton, to win the heart of the heroine, Janice Meredith.
