London: The Folio Society, 2012. No. 187 of 980 numbered copies. Hardcover. Near fine. Originally published in Boston in 1897. 2 vols.: 190; 191-398 p. 43 cm. Colour illustrations. Red and black cloth hardcovers with all edges gilt. Vol. I in red slipcase, vol. II in black. Includes Folio Society booklet in envelope. Some marks to slipcases. Top corners in vol. I slightly bumped. Some light scratches to text block edges. A few marks on slipcases.
With Essays on Japanese Art by Kakuzo Okakura, Director of the Imperial School at Tokyo, Japan, and a new Essay for the Folio Society Edition by David Perkins. Editor was the Anglo-Irish newspaper owner, editor and scholar Frank Brinkley (1841-1912) who resided in Meiji-period Japan for over 40 years and became the author of numerous books on Japanese culture, art and architecture. Okakura (1863 1913) was a Japanese scholar who contributed to the development of arts in Japan. Outside Japan, he is chiefly remembered today as the author of The Book of Tea.
