London: George Allen and Unwin, 1936. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/Very Good. First Edition. Red cloth boards with gilt lettering on spine. Front top fore-corner bumped. Previous owner's name on ffep, else interior clean. Dust jacket has sticker blemish on front panel; chipped at tail of spine; bottom edge of front panel has a closed creased tear; rear panel rubbed; price clipped; in a clear archival sleeve. Sixteen plates with illustrations from photographs. 285, [3] pages. 21.5 x 14 cm. Grace James' memoir of her experiences in Japan, giving a vivid picture of life in Tokyo as seen through the eyes of an English family during part of the Meiji era (1885-1895) and also impressions of Japan from her visit in 1934. Grace James (1882-1965) was born in Tokyo to an English military family and spent her first twelve years in Japan. She was an author of collections of Japanese folk tales as well as the John and Mary children's adventure series which she wrote between 1935 and 1963.
