Rein made various travels in Europe, America and Asia, and wrote several works about his research there. This work starts with a detailed description of the physical geography and the natural history of Japan: covering the volcanoes, climate, islands, mountains, flora, fauna and more. The second part deals with the history and the people, including the different shogunates, costumes, customs, art and architecture, etc.The first edition of the English translation appeared in 1884. The German original Japan nach Reisen und Studien im Auftrage der Königlich Preussischen Regierung dargestellt, was first published in 1881. A second volume to the German edition appeared in 1886.
