This is an uncommon essay on the development of natural history in Japan, on the influence of early Chinese & Western contacts and on Japanese books of wood-block illustration. It is also the catalogue for an exhibition of Japanese botanical books and manuscripts held at the Clements Library, University of Michigan, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of America's first treaty with Japan (1954). These essays were originally printed in the Asa Gray Bulletin N S 3 pp 289-561 Spring 1961.
