"Soft-Boiled Sergeant" chronicles a young soldier's entry into the military. good-natured Staff Sergeant, Burke, helps a young soldier get through difficulties with other people and overcome his nervousness. Originally titled Death of a Dogface. Magazine changed it, making Salinger deeply resentful. A story of love and condemning phoniness, written before Salinger had actually seen action in the war, but becomes a precursor to his more famous work on Holden Caulfield condemning phoniness: Catcher in the Rye.
