Thomas Sanford Tousey (1883 – 1961) while he studied art at some of the most prestigious art schools (Art Institute of Chicago, studied under Howard Pyle, at the Art Students League in New York and then finished art school in Paris) his career began two years before graduating from high school with drawing daily chalk-plate cartoons for the Anderson Morning Herald. After returning from Paris, he established a twenty-year career in New York as a freelance illustrator and cartoonist. During the 1930's Tousey began a new artist path - writing and illustrating children's books, becoming one of the bestselling children's book authors of his day . Over forty titles followed his first book in 1932, most involving cowboys, Indians, horses, the Old West, and a series of biographies of famed westerners.
