Early days in Jessamine County, Kentucky, are recalled in this new 68-page booklet, which we've titled: Jessamine County, Kentucky, USA The 8.5 x 11 spiral-bound booklet, reprinted on 60# opaque paper, is compiled from: Jessamine County's 175th Anniversary Historical Souvenir Book 1798 - 1973, and Kentucky, a Guide to the Bluegrass State, a WPA book, first printed in 1939. The tri-color front cover is printed on 80# card stock and has been protected with a vinyl sheet. Among the subjects included are: Early Jessamine County; "Firsts"; the Centennial Celebration in 1898; County Judges; How communities in Jessamine County were named (fact or fable); Nicholasville -- 1973 officials, history, mayors of years past; Wilmore -- 1973 officials, history; Keene history; Shakertown/Pleasant Hill; Outstanding black citizens; Early schools; Asbury College; Asbury Theological Seminary; Jessamine County Library; Laymen for Christ; Churches; Lodges; Showboat Princess; Names of the 1975th Celebration Bells and Brothers of the Brush; Almahurst Farm; Horse Notes; Sample Jessamine County recipes, such as Salt Rising Bread; other interesting tidbits of local history. Although perhaps out of date as a tour book, the WPA guides are rich in history and trivia. The brief excerpts include a map of the area, and tour stops at Nicholasville, Shakertown and Wilmore. The booklet has many illustrations, although the quality of these is not great. They include: the committees and personnel connected to the 175th celebration; many churches, schools and other buildings, street scenes, a sketch of a Shaker ceremony, etc. .
