About This Item
Phoenix, OR: Ephemera Inc, 1990. Metal Pin. Very Good Plus. [LGBTQ]. Anonymous. "Jesse Helms You Mean Old Fart, Give Us More Homo Art! NEA Controversy Pin." Phoenix, OR: Ephemera Inc., 1990. English language. Metal pin with pink and black print under clear laminate. 1.25 x 1.25 in. 3 x 3 cm. 0.5 oz. Age evident but no issues. Very Good Plus."This pin comes out of the NEA-funding controversies of the early 1990s when white segregationist senator Jesse Helms went on a witch hunt through contemporary art, tarring and feathering artists like Andres Serrano, Karen Finley, and Robert Mapplethorpe. The contested issues of that moment around censorship, state funding, and transgression in the arts have been thoroughly taught to every subsequent generation of US art students. This pin bears testament to that.
