About This Item

n.p., n.d.. Pamphlet. 12p. staplebound pamphlet reprinted from the Telescope-Messenger; mild toning, otherwise very good. Uphaus was jailed during the McCarthy period for refusing to name names. "Thus when I think about Jesus and his end on the cross, I wonder how savagely a hating, exploiting, war-ridden civilization would crucify him today, if he returned and began to drive criminals, monopolists and profiteers out of our trading centers and capitols. So I quite truthfully say to Grandfather's spirit when it hovers around me that being a fellow-traveler with Jesus makes me restless and dissatisfied with myself, and with the immoral climate of a social order that stands condemned. Jesus' teachings are so incompatible with my surroundings. Their depth of meaning is lost in a world that values profits above persons and permits killing as an end in itself.
