About This Item
New York: The Maccabaean Publishing Co, 1904. Full Description:
HERZL, Theodor. A Jewish State. An Attempt at a Modern Solution of the Jewish Question. Revised from the English Translation of Miss Sylvie D'Avigdor, with Special Preface and Notes by J. de Haas. New York: The Maccabaean Publishing Co., 1904.
First American English language edition. An English language translation of Herzl, the Father of Zionism's book Der Judenstaat which called for the creation of a Jewish State. Octavo (9 x
6 1/8 inches; 230 x 155 mm). xxii, 102, [2, blank]. With half-title and frontispiece portrait which follows the title-page of the famous photograph of Herzl on the balcony of the Hotel Les Trois Rois in Basel, taken by E.M. Lilien.
Full limp blue cloth. Front cover lettered in gilt. Floral endpapers. Front free endpaper laid in. Some minor rubbing and wrinkling to cloth. A few pages with some light toning. Overall a near fine copy.
"The real impetus to regain their country and to reconstitute their State did not come until the mid-nineteenth century, when a new political solution was advocated by a number of politicians and thinkers, both Jewish and non-Jewish. It was Herzl's book which really crystallized the idea of a national home for the Jews." (PMM, 381)
"Theodor Herzl, (born May 2, 1860, Budapest, Hungary, Austrian Empire [now in Hungary]—died July 3, 1904, Edlach, Austria), founder of the political form of Zionism, a movement to establish a Jewish homeland. His pamphlet The Jewish State (1896) proposed that the Jewish question was a political question to be settled by a world council of nations. He organized a world congress of Zionists that met in Basel, Switz., in August 1897 and became first president of the World Zionist Organization, established by the congress. Although Herzl died more than 40 years before the establishment of the State of Israel, he was an indefatigable organizer, propagandist, and diplomat who had much to do with making Zionism into a political movement of worldwide significance."
