This catalogue was produced to accompany the first exhibition ever devoted exclusively to Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675), co-organised by the National Gallery of Art, Washington, and the Royal Cabinet of Paintings Mauritshuis, The Hague. The exhibition was held from 12 November 1995 to 11 February 1996 in Washington, and 1 March to 2 June 1996 in the Hague. The catalogue includes essays by leading art historians on the work of Vermeer, including Ben Broos, Arthur K.Wheelock, Jr. Jorgen Wadum and Albert Blankert.
