About This Item

Published by Frederick Ungar Publishing Company, New York; 1985. 8vo. 228pp. First edition, first impression. Condition: Fine/Very Good+

Bound in original red cloth boards with title in black to the spine. The binding is square and tight and in clean, smart condition, with just a hint of bumping to the edges. Inside, the pages are clean and bright and free from any signs of damage or wear.

This smart book is housed in its original first issue dust jacket, which is vibrant and bright and in lovely condition. There is a little shelf wear to the edges and rubbing to the front panel. The jacket is housed in a plastic protective sleeve, which has a small hole to the rear, although this has not affected the jacket at all.

In all, this is a very smart example of this biography by Lewis on one of the greatest modern authors of the twentieth century. This work was the first full-length study of le Carré's work. It aims to give him the literary, rather than journalistic recognition he deserves. Peter Lewis is a noted British critic, who is the author of numerous articles on contemporary fiction and reviews regularly for the Time Literary Supplement. In this book he give perceptive and searching analysis to all the le Carré novels, including best-seller "The Little Drummer Girl", combined with a searching study of the world of espionage as it is elucidated through the writer's fiction.
