About This Item

Clarendon Press, Oxford, first edition, 1939. Rebound in black cloth with a red leather spine-label, 8vo,. x, [4], 358 pp. Approximately 500 entries. Still the standard primary bibliography of Dryden's works, this work also describes commentaries on them published up to 1767. Separate listings cover Dryden's poems, miscellanies, collected editions of poems, plays, separate prologues and epilogues, collected editions of plays, contributed prologues and epilogues, prose, attributed works, letters, Drydeniana, and Poems on Affairs of State. MacDonald includes much valuable information on the printing and publishing histories of Dryden's works. From the conclusion of a contemporary review by John Carter: 2Mr. Macdonald has given us a thorough, scholarly, and probably definitive bibliography, interspersed with valuable disquisitions on the biographical and literary background. Only true aficionados of Dryden will read it for pleasure, but every rare book dealer, every library and all collectors of the Restoration Period will want it on their shelves. Title-page somewhat browned, name on front pastedown endpaper, a little shaken, edges of spine slightly worn, otherwise Good.
