This image is from Van Sant's Polaroid series-he used a Polaroid camera to take photographs of actors during auditions and on set, reproducing them, as here, as gelatin silver prints.

Van Sant is best known for directing the films Drugstore Cowboy, My Own Private Idaho, Goodwill Hunting, and the Harvey Milk biopic, Milk. Some of his Polaroid photographs were published as 108 Portraits.
