Inscribed to E. C. Huie, Esq. Signature of A. H. Reed dated 4 Nov 1949. [2], (7)-111 pages + frontispiece + 19 illustrations on 5 plate leaves. Red cloth boards with black lettering on spine. Page dimensions: 212 x 135mm. New Zealand regional history, Otago, 19th Century. "The full story of how he came to settle in Waikouaiti, to acquire large areas of land thereabouts, and to engage in agriculture, is told in this book. One of his earliest steps was to establish a mission station to look after the spiritual welfare of the whalers and the Maoris" - page 8. John Jones, popularly known as Johnny Jones, was the grandfather of Alfred Eccles.
